Dear Suzanne,
I would encourage this friend to visit her doctor ASAP. Difficulty with 
chewing is often a first indication of degenerative neurogenic diseases 
including ALS. This is not a symptom to ignore. Encourage her to go 
immediately--this is not a "normal" behavior and she needs to find out the 
cause.
