[DYSPHAGIA] oral dyspagia/e-stin/o-m ex

I recently had Bell's Palsy in my last month of pregnancy which would be
considered a mild-moderate case. I watched myself with both dismay and
great interest, being an SLP. I did not go on any med/steroid tx because
of the pregnancy, not to mention the guarded usefulness of it. Symptoms
got their worst after about 4 days, and I started seeing slow recovery
after about two weeks. By 4-5 weeks I had about 90-95% recovery. I had
had the baby by then (2 weeks into the Palsy), so I'm not sure when the
rest came all the way back. Being an SLP, I was constantly trying to
activate anything I could on that side, though I did not do any e-stim. I
also took a leap of faith at day 3 or 4 and went to my accupuncturist who
thought he could help. I do not feel that I derived any benefit from him
(for this). In sum, I can't say for sure whether my exercises helped or
not, but my gut feeling is that function is going to come back when it is
going to come back, regardless of what you do. It's possible that my
exercises sped things a little, but at the very least, they empowered me a
little to think that I MIGHT be helping myself.

You can always offer a home program of exercises that I'm sure she would
be willing to try. You generally want to do whatever you can when suddenly
half of your face stops working and you have to start manually blinking
your eye.

Good luck!
Becky

I am presently co-treating a patient with Bell's Palsy as ordered by her
doc...she received the initial meds/steroid tx....I know the controversy re
tx vs. spontaneous recovery...she is getting some return but wondered about
others and their experience with treatment of Bell's....thanks
