Bonnie's note encouraged me to inform the listserve of a related initiative
here in Canada. The Riverdale Hospital, with the support of a grant from the
Change Foundation has produced a multicultural video to teach safe
swallowing practices to caregivers and family members.
Swallowing may be the same from culture to culture, but language and
attitudes towards food and eating differ. We need to be able to communicate
effectively to ALL our clients and the video is a small step towards doing
that.
The video presently exists in two versions: English and Cantonese,
reflecting the makeup of community The Riverdale Hospital is part of. But
the video has been designed so that adaptation into other languages is
relatively straightforward and cost-efficient. In the next year the "Feeding
all Tongues" projects will move into three related areas
1) dissemination of the video to parties who can benefit from it
2) seeking partnerships with other institutions so the video can be
translated into other languages
3) evaluating the difference it makes in terms of people's lives

I would appreciate the Listserve's input into how this process happen.
Getting the word out to you is part of it. We hope to have a clip from the
video on the Riverdale Hospital website in the new year.
I'd appreciate any feedback.
