TriAlliance of Rehabilitation Organizations Update
Dear Headliners -
As many of you know, the TriAlliance of Health and Rehabilitation
Professions was formed in 1991 as a means by which the American
Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), the American Physical Therapy
Association (APTA), and the American Speech-Language Pathology
Association (ASHA) can address issues of mutual concern and initiate, as
appropriate, collective action that will enhance our individual
responses to issues facing our respective professions. The TriAlliance
is composed of the Presidents and Executive Directors of the three
participating organizations. The leadership of the TriAlliance rotates
among the presidents of the three organizations and this year I have had
the pleasure of serving as 2001 Chair of the TriAlliance. This report
is to provide you with a few highlights regarding the TriAlliance's 2001
activities:
· This year the TriAlliance has conducted it's work via conference calls
(May 15, 2001, October 4, 2001, and December 3, 2001).
· Current TriAlliance projects include: exploring collaborative
recruitment efforts aimed at middle school and high school students to
further enhance each organization's recruitment activities; and the
development of a TriAlliance exhibit for use at the annual AMBUCS
meeting (AMBUCS is a national services organization that currently
provides annual scholarships of approximately $125,000 to physical
therapy students, $85,000 to occupational therapy students, and $70,000
to speech-language pathology and audiology students).
· The staff of the TriAlliance organizations also collaborate on an
ongoing basis on various activities. Current examples include:
legislative collaboration on S. 1394 and S. 1395 - bills recently
introduced by Senator Ensign (R-NV), that call for the permanent repeal
of the $1500 cap and a technical correction to acknowledge
speech-language pathologists as independent practitioners under the
Medicare outpatient sections; and information sharing regarding the
organizations' activities to date related to Evidence Based Practice.
· TriAlliance Convention Sessions - since 1992 the TriAlliance has
conducted sessions on a topic of mutual interest at each of the three
organizations annual conventions. The 1992 topic was "The Impact of the
Americans with Disabilities Act on the Professions and the Public". The
2000 topic was "The Challenges of Change: Medicare Part B Outpatient
Services". This year's topic is "Future Trends & Issues in Clinical
Practice, Clinical Education, and Public Policy". The session was very
favorably received at the AOTA conference (April 2001) and the APTA
conference (June 2001). The TriAlliance session at the ASHA Convention
is scheduled for Thursday, November 15, 2001 from 2:00 - 3:30 pm in
Convention Center 212. I hope to see you there.
John Bernthal
President
