[Dysphagia] Dysphagia Digest, Vol 79, Issue 14
I am not familar with that particular trach, though 2 of my ICU ventilator dependent pts recently received Portex "Trach-Talks". This utilizes an outside 02 flow connected to an extra line coming from the trach to direct that airflow (not the pt's own) up and out through the upper airway to allow the pts to be able to phonate withthe cuff inflated. I was previously unfamiliar with this style of trach. It does not provide perfect phonation, though the pt is able to voice softly. It's definitely better than nothing for those pts. It also seems to be pretty positioning-dependent. Has anyone else had good/bad experiences with this type of trach? I understand that there is more maintenance to be done by nursing due to clogging and flushing of the 02 line, so maybe that's why they are not that commonly used.
