You are correct, it was large amounts. Jai you are also correct...few
reported deaths
In our hospital it was a "hot topic" a few years ago (as well as
infection control....which is an ongoing hot topic so the hospital
stopped stocking the single vials (steri blue if I recall correctly).
So.....trying to be really crafty, we switched to green dye (duh!
Mixture of blue and yellow dye). We also use minimal amounts.
As far as the use of it for trach/vent patients, we don't do MEBD
testing due to reliability problems and the fact that we can do FEES

I believe those cases also involved adding large amounts of blue dye
straight into the enteral feeds - the amount that would be used during a
bedside use of blue dye should be much much lower than those amounts -
and can also be limited and controlled by preparing single syringes of
only 1-2 mL of dye total. Really one little drop goes a long way...

The other big issue was the case reports of deaths associated with the
(over)use of blue dye in certain critically ill patients.
For this reason, many hospitals stopped allowing it altogether
For example...

When our facility used to do it, we had challenges with obtaining the
dye from our pharmacy due to sterilization requirements, etc. We
eventually stopped performing the blue dye test due to chance of
infection to some pts.

Just wanting some comments on anyone's experiences with doing the Blue
Dye test with Trach patients and/or feeding patients on a ventilator.
Thanks!
