[Dysphagia] ? aerophagia
Hi Everyone,
A colleague has asked for some advice about a self-referring patient.
Unfortunately we have no history except that he is a young chap with an
ileostomy which fills up with air and needs emptying of air more
frequently than would usually be expected. He is not dysphagic, in that
he denies difficulty swallowing, odynophagia or symptoms of aspiration
but is concerned about the rate at which the ileostomy fills with air. I
presume that the types of food / fluid he consumes (ie; carbonated
drinks or gas causing foods) will play a role but is it possible that he
also experiences aerophagia. Does anyone have any management strategies
to reduce aerophagia? Or any suggestions for what else could be going
on?
Thanks
Helen
