[Dysphagia] Productivity Standards
Hi Sheri. As you can see from the first response to your inquiry, trying to
truly measure productivity for an SLP is at a best thorny endeavor if not an
impossible task. Prior to forming the Aphasia Center of Innovative
Treatment, I spent years with a major medical center trying to establish
standards of productivity that would apply to a 17 facility system. The HC
system had created its own program, which in my opinion, revolved around
nursing, which was arguably the highest labor expense so therefore that made
sense to me. We probably made things up more than scientifically
established standards as we set up SLP standards. No, truth be told we
definitely did make things up. As you can see in Eileen's response, the
typical standard is 75% but that actually means little since some people
work 50 hour weeks, downtime doesn't count, evaluation count for 45 minutes,
etc. Eileen's numbers I think reflect common standards that I have seen.
All of this is way more arbitrary than the beancounters would care to admit
no matter how much smoke they blow your way. Do the best for you, your
staff and mostly your patients; that's my humble advice.
