Allergy to barium is, indeed, very rare. Above are two of perhaps seven reports. In response to Dr Dagdilelis , I have been involved as a defense witness for two radiologists under whose care the patient died after inadvertent instillation of small amounts of Gastrografin into the lung. Another case involved defense of a radiologist who refused to use Gastrografin because he felt that the patient was in danger of aspirating and used barium. The patient did aspirate, the radiologist (resident) was fired for not following his superior?s order for Gastrografin and it took two years to have him reinstated on the court?s decision that he was right as the Gastrografin could have proven lethal. Evidence was provided by the manufacturer to that effect.
