[Dysphagia] Digital MBSS Recording
Karen et al,
If you want to incorporate your MBS with other fluoro procedures - and you
have a diagnostic imaging dept (as we do at our regional hospital) consider
this option if there is any chance to upgrade your entire diagnostic imaging
system: (directly from our radiology dept manager):
"We just installed the GE precision 500-D Radiologic/Fluoroscopic suite. Our
PACS system is a McKesson that is currently running the version 11.0 Horizon
Medical Imaging software."
With this system is a DVD-R, which is a direct capture device synched to the
fluoroscopic output. It's recording "fast" - "real time", but they don't
really use "frames per second" anymore (according to the GE person) it's
"pulses per second". What this allows us to do, is record all our MBS on a
separate DVD, then we pop it out, and review it on our laptop or PC with
Windows Media Player in our office. This also allows for a very nice
consultative appointment with family and patient right after, or at a later
date as an office visit/follow-up swallow treatment to review and practice
strategies. We get more precise frame-by-frame (technically pulse by pulse)
control when reviewing on Windows Media Player. However, in the fluoro
suite, we can also review, use the jog shuttle, etc to playback the track.
In addition, even though all other digital "films" are available to review
on our networked computer stations, the PACS vendor and our IS dept. still
are working on allowing us to review the recorded MBS from our networked
computer - coming in the near future.
What does this save us? (1) Having to purchase another stand-alone unit and
the digital image is excellent, (2) it saves time, because no longer am I
inputting all patient info on my own - it's already done by the techs and
ready to go, (3) I can use a standard computer and standard media software
to review, (4) if equipment breaks down, I don't have to call KayPentax or
other...this is a fluoro problem now. I also have a portable FEES/ST set-up
in my office, which, if indicated, serves as a valuable optional tool if the
patient is over 300 lbs (fluoro table weight limit), can't fit in the VESS
chair, or fit between the fluoroscope and table.
Further questions? Reply to Email Lisa Erwin-Davidson, MS, CCC, SLP, North
Country Health System in Vermont. And yes, I am looking to hire another SLP
- anyone interested? The snow is just melting today, and it's the last
weekend for decent mountain skiing.

Subject: [Dysphagia] Digital MBSS Recording
I am seeking information about options for digital recording of MBSS.
Our facility is considering the Kay/Pentax system (requested by the SLP
staff), and we are now comparing it to other available equipment.
Is anyone using something called EZ Pic from Perkins electronics, which
is compatible with Siemens' Axiom Sireskop? If so, would you be able to
share your experiences?
Thanks so much.
Karen :)
