[Dysphagia] Elders and PEG
I am wondering if pharyngeal strengthening exercises would be
appropriate for a 90 y.o.f. with history of progressive cerebellar
atrophy (longstanding since the 1950s), ataxia and progressive
dysphagia. She appears at moderate risk for aspiration of thin liquids
due to slowed hyolaryngeal excursion and decreased strength of airway
closure. This is a very spunky lady who has expressed wishes against
any artificially provided nutrition/hydration.
Thanks for any thoughts. Regards,
Karen
