[Dysphagia] Intervention

A new pt was just admitted to our rehab facility...........I don't have any
of his swallowing info yet, but he has multiple medical problems including a
recent pneumonitis with subsequent PEG placement; he is cognitively intact.
My question is regarding the frequency of treatment. In the hospital the slp
was seeing him twice/day for laryngeal/pharyngeal exercises and then
recommending that he practice independently 4x/day..
*** If this unfortunate gentleman indeed has had pneumonitis, then he has refluxed/vomited and aspirated ? what on earth do ?laryngeal/pharyngeal exercises? have to do with this? And what are they anyway? I'm afraid I can't visualize any such thing nor imagine what effect it might have.
.........it made me wonder,
do we
have any data on frequency of exercise and effectiveness??? Is more always
better?
*** Since there is no valid research in any area of intervention for swallowing, I guess not
and more of the above is certainly not better!
