[Dysphagia] Coke vs. Pepsi

Actually, it is not urban myth that Coca-Cola tenderizes meat. Coke
contains phosphoric acid which breaks down the fibers of meat when exposed.
As for the efficacy of Coke as opposed to Pepsi, and dislodging of foods in
the esophagus, I cannot say. I will say however, that Pepsi also contains
phosphoric acid.

Urban myth has it that acids in Coca-Cola will tenderize meat. I suppose
that is what is behind this recommendation. The fizz is not the factor.

I came across an interesting reference from "Digestive Health Center"
(published by University of Virginia Health System) regarding "Nutrition
Guidelines Following Esophageal Stent Placement. General guideline #8: If
food ever feels "stuck" in your throat take a couple sips of Coca-Cola (not
Pepsi). This will help dislodge food from your esophagus. You may want to
repeat this throughout the day, especially before and after each meal.
I understand the concept that a carbonated beverage may possibly loosen up
lodged food, but I certainly hope the person only takes a few small sips,
then pauses. But why Coca-Cola vs Pepsi? I have no preference for either
one, just curious as to why one is better than the other. Any thoughts?
