[Dysphagia] Off topic (orders)
I have. I worked at a hospital that had a program approved by the
physicians' executive committee where each physician signs a form allowing
SLPs to write specific orders for their pts. They can approve all the
options (diet upgrades, diet downgrades, MBS studies, etc), none of them, or
certain ones as they wish. There are more specifics to the program in terms
of how long a SLP must have practiced, how long they must have worked in
that facility before they can participate, only full time staff, continuing
ed, communication with nurses/dietitians if pts must be NPO, etc. It really
made an improvement in patient care. This was a smaller hospital (LTAC) so
it worked well because we already worked closely with physicians & staff,
just helped speed up processes. I know there are some downsides to these
programs but works well in that facility.
