[Dysphagia] HSV lesions

Hi

Sorry I couldn't remember who posted this so thanks for reminding me Janet.

I asked a friend of mine about this who's a dermatologist. He said that it is
extremely rare in his experience (but perhaps not impossible) to get Herpes
Simplex Virus (= common cold sore virus) producing sores in the epithelia of
the pharynx or the oesophagus. To treat cold sores you normally whack with
Zovirax (can't remember the pharma name - acyclovene??)) but it must be within
the first few hours. You can treat after this with an antiviral tablet but it
is not as effective.

He said it's ++++ more common to find that it's candida (thrush) not HSV.
People who are immune suppressed are more likely to suffer with HSV lesions
(lots of us carry the virus and are fine). He didn't mention any link between
candida and HSV.

A little help?

Paula

>HSV is not related to thrush at all. HSV is a virus. Orally, it causes cold
sores on the outer part of the lips. It does not cause sores inside the mouth
or on the tongue. There is a lot of information online about the herpes
virus/HSV. Try googling "oral herpes?"
