[Dysphagia] Re:IV hydration
.I've just begun working with geriatrics in a skilled nursing facility. I've encountered great resistence from both doctors and facility staff to hydrating dysphagia pathients with an IV
*** There are good reasons to avoid IV hydration in elderly persons in LTC. IV is uncomfortable, often pulled out, frequently goes interstitial very quickly and often, one can't find suitable veins. This is why hypodermoclysis - subcutaneous hydration - is good for jsut such patients. It is easy to administer, and, if given overnight, two or three times a week, maintains hydration often without the patient's being aware of it. It is used widely for the elderly in LTC or at home - except in the US, for reasons I have been unable to discover.
