[Dysphagia] Feedback on Straw drinking

I have a question re: straw drinking with patients and how with some patient's it faciliates easier transport and more natural swallowing while in others it clearly appears to lead to coughing..Why is it that there is such variability within populations (dementia, aphasia etc)?
