[Dysphagia] efficacy of DPNS

  • Subject: [Dysphagia] efficacy of DPNS

We are a group of graduate SLP students from Boston
University involved in a class project investigating
the pros and cons of deep pharyngeal neuromuscular
stimulation(DPNS). We have read through some of the
discussions of this therapy on the listserv
(particularly the discussion in 2001), however we have
noticed there has not been much discussion of this
topic recently. The research we have already reviewed
is more specific to thermal application generally
(Rosenbek 1991 and 1998, and Coyle's critique of
Freed) and we have reviewed the manual distributed by
Karlene Stefanakos during her training seminars.

Can any of you help us by providing any new insight on
the efficacy of DPNS, specifically is anyone aware of
any new research or can anyone speak to the observed
effects of this treatment in their clinical practice?

Please feel free to reply to us directly by email
(lesleysylvan@yahoo.com) or to the listserv.

Thanks in advance!
Lesley, Joann, Eunjeong, Caitlin
