[Dysphagia] Cross Training

I am an Occupational Therapist in California. I have CA state licensed
certification in Swallowing, along with 5 of the eight Occupational
Therapists in my agency.
I have been a direct Primary Service Provider in Swallowing for 18 years
..10 years primarily on Acute Rehab, where yes I divided my time with
ADL/splinting/transfers/vison as well as Eating-Swallowing/self feeding for
the population of primarily CVA/Head Injury; and 8 years at our Acute Care
Trauma Center where Swallowing Service provision, along with its extreme
complexities, is our first priority. I am confident I have the proper
training to match all of the SLPs in my agency.
I have experienced many unnecessary conflicts that look like territory in
the area of Swallowing Services. As the nature of the work we do in
Swallowing is so complex, energy would surely be better spent in joining
forces to work toward demanding adequate education programs and appropriate
collegiate coursework specialized in Swallowing for all clinicans, along
with demand by agencies, physicians, and managers for demonstration of
competency in Swallowing clinical performance.
