Hi All,
See below (if interested) for an update on my patient with suspected ALS.
It has turned out to be something else. Many kudos to Irene for her
assistance. The doc here figured it out on his own, but not before this
person had been seen by several neurologists and degenerative disease
specialists.

Irene,
The doc is now thinking paraneoplastic. They did an ultrasound yesterday
and found a tumor impinging on the rib growing onto the lung with a couple
of other 'spots' ant and post.
I will continue to be involved at arm's length assisting with symptom
management as far as speech and swallowing goes. The doc just hit them with
the news when I went in the room this aft to get more history and do more
neuro exam. The next step is a biopsy and direction from the cancer clinic
as to treatment options, etc..
So, my question for you is...do you have any info/articles on this diagnosis
and how it affects the swallow? Can you relay any info you have on this to
me so I can better serve this patient and any future patients I am involved
with with this same diagnosis.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge Irene, it is greatly appreciated.
Kim

Could this be paraneoplastic? Any Hx of Ca or anyone looking for it? The
other thought is an encephalitis - do you know what the antibiotic is for?
Irene.
