Hello all,
I work in a facility with a large percentage of trach/vents. This facility has a history of using mainly
glucofilm testing and MBS. They don't use blue dye much because the medical director feels it increases
suctioning unnecessarily (but that's a whole other topic and one of the many things I want to address in
the hospital eventually). Anyhow, this glucofilm thing is relatively new to me. The glucofilm I have
been getting from our pharmacy states it is for blood. I understand there may be others made
specifically for urine and secretions. I asked the pharmacy about this and if I should be getting the
other kind but haven't really gotten an answer. Anyone have any info or opinions on this? So far I have
felt that the glucofilm testing does seem to correlate with the MBS results but not enough to not do
MBSs. I have had false positives and negatives and wonder if my results would be more reliable with a
different type of film? I mainly use MBS to determine what treatment is needed, to try strategies, and
to really see what's safe. The glucofilm I use along with my bedside exams and to recheck if nursing has
concerns after a diet has been initiated. I tried to check the archives but couldn't find anything.
