At our facility radiology mixes barium into different viscosities based
on a recipe they developed using a "viscometer". We use 'centepoises
(cps)' as units of measurement: 100cps = thin liquid, 250cps = thick
liquid, 800cps = thin puree, 2000cps thick puree. We can evaluate
patient performance on the various barium consistencies and then write
diet orders which match performance eg "mixed textures with liquids at
250 cps". Nutrition services then follows a recipe to thicken drinks
accordingly to our recommendations.
For solids we used a 'tea biscuit/scone' which is baked with barium
powder.
