[DYSPHAGIA] thickeners and dehydration...help!

About a month ago, our dietary department requested information re: hydration availability per serving from 2 companies that "sell" gum based thickeners. We have recieved no response as of yet. Until we do, our patients will have to deal with the starch based thickener. Our facility is not about to change thickeners until we know some info on the hydration content. It would be nice to be able to give them something more visually appealing; however, it's not worth the risk if hydration is comprimised.

I wonder if we could hear from the dietitians about
gums used as thickening agents. Simplythick is a
anionic bacterial polysaccharide that is used as an
emulsifier because it holds water. The other gums have
the same properties. For example, agar is a bulk
laxative * precisely because it attracts and holds
water.
I have serious concerns about the potential for
dehydration if one thickens with a substance that
binds to water rather than releases it.
