[DYSPHAGIA] Shaker exercises
- Subject: [DYSPHAGIA] Shaker exercises
- From: eripley@yahoo.com (Irene Campbell-Taylor)
- Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 19:41:52 -0800 (PST)
These exercises were atttempted on elderly normal
subjects:
Shaker R; Kern M; Bardan E; Taylor A; Stewart ET;
Hoffmann RG; Arndorfer RC; Hofmann C; Bonnevier J .
Augmentation of deglutitive upper esophageal sphincter
opening in the elderly by exercise. Am J Physiol,
272:G1518-22 1997
"In normal elderly subjects, deglutitive UES opening
is amenable to augmentation by exercise aimed at
strengthening the UES opening muscles"
The aim is to improve passage of the bolus through the
UES by increasing its duration and extent of opening.
These are the suprahyoid muscles, not movement of the
larynx except insofar as it is moved (anteriorly) by
means of its attachment to the hyoid.
The exercises have not been proven on ill elderly,
especially those with progressive disorders, cognitive
impairment and serious co-morbid conditions.
Irene.
