[DYSPHAGIA] epiglottic inversion

Brownwyn, 
Basically, the Shakir exercises are to aid in laryngeal elevation. Not all 
pts. are able to do this, but for those who can, they are quite effective. 
The individual lies flat on a hard surface (floor or mat in therapy gym)--the 
bed doesn't work. Then he/she slowly raises the head looking toward the toes 
and holds before a slow gentle release. Repeat up to 15-20 times as 
tolerated. (If you don't believe this works, try it on yourself when lying on 
the floor.) You'll be able to feel yourself how effective this is yourself. 
It's hard work!
