[DYSPHAGIA] any ideas out there?
Dear Carol:
There is nothing that can be "written" that will assure good oral care. The key is to educate, educate, educate and educate. When you're done, there'll be some staff turnover and you need to repeat. An effective way to do the initial education is to get it put in as a part of your facility's orientation program. I have worked in hospitals and long term care facilities where that has been done well. However, oftimes, it is not done well since the people who need it most are the ones who require "heavy care", to use nursing lingo. The CNA's are inconsistent, dependent on their staffing ratios, in my experience, even in the more compliant SNF's.
Sincerely,
Jeff Lewis
