[DYSPHAGIA] coughing while eating
FWIW, anecdotal: I think this answer is correct; I have the same symptom
frequently and have known GER with ulcers successfully treated in the
past. I was starting to think I needed a VFSS myself before I realized
what it actually was. Dextromethorphan suppresses the cough for me, but
antireflux treament or at least an OTC antacid should help if this is the
main problem. Also review her meds for any with cough as side effect that
could be compounding the problem. Good hydration is also a helpful
factor. I personally note a hard time singing, particularly hitting the
high notes, if I am having more reflux or don't take enough fluids. If I
drink iced tea, which is a must for surviving 90 degree or hotter weather
for me in the South, I water it down with extra ice or cold water.
Pepto-bismol also helps with heartburn and that dry feeling at times if it
persists after meals and is still bothering me at bedtime.
