check. But, the studies done try to make sure that the
patients mouth is clean and uncontaminated before
testing the saliva. Also, given the probability these
days of the mouth's having had mouthwash or toothpaste
in it recently, I wouldn't think it's much of a risk.
Oral care is still the most difficult thing I find to
get done, including in ICU - even though, especially
in trached patients and in dysphagic patients in
general, the primary cause of pneumonia is aspiration
of pathogen-filled saliva by a compromised parient. I
keep trying, however.
